Wallpaper Trends 2027: Dark Grounds, Big Chintz Florals, Blue and the Return of the Mural
# Wallpaper Trends 2027: Dark Grounds, Big Chintz Florals, Blue and the Return of the Mural The wallpaper trends for 2027 are clearer than in most years, because the colour forecasters, the paint brands and the wallpaper makers have all landed in roughly the same place. Walls are getting darker, florals are getting bigger and more traditional, and blue is the colour everyone wants to use as an accent. Underneath it all sits a warm, earthy palette of clay pink and olive green. This guide reads the 2027 forecasts from the wall's point of view. Our surface pattern design trends 2027 guide covers the bigger picture for fabric, stationery and packaging. Here the focus is narrower and more practical: what goes on a wall next year, which room it suits, and the exact colours to match it with. Where we show a palette, we give the hex codes too, so you can carry the same colours into paint charts, fabric swatches or a print file.
The Mood of 2027 Walls Is Depth
The clearest single message from the wallpaper makers is that 2027 walls go dark. In its September roundup of 2027 wallpaper trends, the UK wallpaper brand Wallsauce says plainly that "moody wallpaper is set to be a major trend in 2027." It names the shades as "dark green, navy, charcoal, burgundy and plum," and describes deep, atmospheric backgrounds carrying detailed botanical or decorative patterns.
That is a real change from the pale, airy walls that dominated the early 2020s. A dark ground does two useful things in a room. It makes edges and corners recede, so a small space feels cosier rather than cramped, and it makes anything light on top of it, a bloom, a leaf, a gold line, glow by contrast.
The trick is to keep the pattern itself detailed. A dark wall with a flat, sparse print can feel heavy. A dark wall with a busy botanical or a jewel-toned floral reads as rich instead. Our dark floral wallpaper guide goes deeper on how to choose one, and the black floral patterns guide covers the near-black end of the range.
Chintz Florals Are the Statement Print
If the mood is dark, the motif is floral, and specifically the traditional chintz floral. Graham & Brown, which has made wallpaper in Britain for 80 years, chose a chintz design as its Design of the Year 2027. Called Roselle Grove, it is described as "a rich floral pattern inspired by traditional chintz" that "captures the delicate whimsy of Indian chintz with an added touch of elevated English flair."
Wallsauce points the same way with its Chinoiserie Chic direction, traditional botanical and bird motifs updated for contemporary walls, in "deep greens, rich blues and dramatic burgundy." The difference from older chinoiserie is the colour. The red and gold versions give way to deeper, more muted grounds that sit comfortably with modern furniture.
Chintz and chinoiserie are both busy, all-over patterns, so scale matters. A large trailing floral works best on a full wall in a dining room or bedroom, where it has space to repeat several times. On a small wall it can look like a few cut-off blooms. Our pattern scale and repeat guide explains how to judge that before you order, and the grandmillennial floral wallpaper guide shows how to style the heritage floral without the room feeling like a museum.
Clay Pink and Olive Green Are the Grounds
The paint brands set the background colours, and for 2027 they have gone warm and earthy.
Graham & Brown paired its chintz floral with Rose Earth, its Colour of the Year, which it calls "a warm, earthy dusky pink with subtle brown undertones," inspired by "natural mineral pigments traditionally sourced from clay deposits in Italy." It is not a sweet pink. It sits closer to terracotta and plaster.
Behr named Grounded as its 2027 colour, "an earthy olive green" that "moves effortlessly between olive and moss, anchored by subtle brown undertones." And Sherwin-Williams chose Celery, "a soft, fresh yellow green with subtle warmth," picked because it reflects "wellness, balance and connection."
For wallpaper this gives two strong options. A clay pink ground suits florals and chintz, where it warms the blooms. An olive or celery ground suits botanicals and leafy prints, where it turns the whole wall into a garden. Both are easier to live with than the dark grounds above, which makes them the better choice for living rooms and kitchens that need to feel bright during the day.
Blue Is the Accent That Makes It Current
On top of those earthy grounds, the forecasters add one bright note, and it is blue. WGSN and Coloro named Luminous Blue their Colour of the Year for 2027, a saturated shade close to lapis and cobalt that they describe as "both mysterious and eccentric."
Blue has the longest history of any colour on walls, from blue and white porcelain prints to toile, so it slots into a 2027 scheme without effort. Navy also appears on Wallsauce's list of moody grounds, which means blue can work at both ends of the room: a deep navy wallpaper in a study, or a bright cobalt motif on a pale wall in a hallway.
Here is a blue palette pulled from our Lapis Terrazzo set, a deep blue stone look with gold flecks:
**Midnight lapis** #1D2345, for the ground or a dark feature wall
**Cobalt** #2249AB, the Luminous Blue accent
**Old gold** #B89D64, for fine lines, trims and frames
Gold and blue is one of the safest premium pairings in interiors, and in 2027 it ties the blue trend to the warm, earthy grounds the paint brands chose.
Soft Focus Murals and Painterly Texture
The other big story is the mural. Wallsauce names two mural directions for next year. One is soft and fluid, with "blended colour and blurred edges," suited to misty landscapes and florals in "muted blues, sage greens, warm neutrals or delicate pinks." The other, which it calls Timeless Art, uses painting-inspired landscapes and still lifes so that "the wall itself" becomes "a statement piece."
Graham & Brown made the same call by naming a Mural of the Year alongside its design and colour. Red Rose County is a stylised view of the Lancashire countryside, built from "bold blocks of colour and expressive brushstrokes" with "visible texture adding depth."
Both point to a wider 2027 theme: walls that look made. The textile trade fair Heimtextil frames its Trends 26/27 around the idea that "craft is a verb," and one of its directions celebrates crafted irregularity, the knots, uneven dyeing and asymmetric finishes that show a design was worked on. On a wall, that means visible brushwork, soft edges and layered colour rather than flat, perfect vector shapes.
Here is a softer palette for that look, pulled from our Lilac Haze set, faded wildflowers on misty blue:
**Dusk plum** #6E3E62, for stems and shadows
**Lilac** #B39BC8, the main bloom colour
**Mist rose** #D9C7D6, a pale ground for bedrooms and nurseries
Wild Prints and Spiky Botanicals
Two smaller motif stories round out the year. The first is animal print. Wallsauce notes that it "has moved far beyond clothing and accessories to become an exciting choice for interiors," from graphic black and white zebra to warmer leopard tones. Used on one wall of a powder room or a dressing area, it is one of the most fun ways to try the trend. Our animal print patterns guide covers how to keep it elegant.
The second is the spiky botanical. "One motif to watch is thistle," Wallsauce says, set against deep backgrounds for a luxurious look. Thistle sits naturally beside the moody grounds and the heritage florals, and it brings a slightly wild, Scottish note to an otherwise soft palette. The same brand also lists Abstract Escapes, dreamlike compositions in "muted greens, blues, earthy neutrals or washed-out tones," for anyone who wants pattern without a literal flower.
Room by Room: Where Each 2027 Trend Works Best
Forecasts only help when they turn into choices for a real room. Here is how the 2027 trends map onto the house.
**Dining room.** The best room for a dark ground and a big chintz floral. It is used mostly in the evening, so the depth feels intimate rather than gloomy.
**Living room.** A clay pink or olive ground with a mid-scale botanical or floral. Bright enough for daytime, warm enough for winter evenings. Add a blue accent in cushions or a lamp.
**Bedroom.** A soft-focus mural or a painterly floral on a pale, misty ground behind the bed. The headboard wall is the natural place for a statement, with the other three walls painted to match.
**Hallway and stairs.** Blue works hard here. A cobalt or navy pattern makes a narrow space feel deliberate, and small to mid-scale repeats hide scuffs better than plain paint.
**Powder room.** The place to take a risk: animal print, thistle on a dark ground, or a dramatic abstract. The room is small and used briefly, so a bold wall never gets tiring.
**Kitchen.** Earthy greens and tile-style geometrics. Our tile patterns guide covers the look for walls and splashback areas.

For big statement florals and soft texture, Velvet Bloom is 45 large painterly blooms, Lilac Haze holds the misty wildflowers above, and Twilight Herbarium is 20 pressed and dried floral designs for the nature study look. Our oversized floral wallpaper guide shows how to hang the larger ones.
The Short Version
Wallpaper in 2027 is warmer, darker and more traditional than it has been for years, with one bright note of blue to keep it modern. Choose a ground from the earth (clay pink, olive, celery) or from the night (navy, plum, forest green), put a big floral or a painterly mural on it, and add blue and gold as the accent. That combination is the most 2027 wall you can make, and it will still look good long after the forecasts have moved on.
