The Colour of 2027 Is Blue, and It Is Not Subtle

The forecast that sets the tone for fashion and product design came out earliest. WGSN and Coloro named Luminous Blue their Colour of the Year for 2027, describing it as "both mysterious and eccentric," with an appeal that reaches "from occasionwear to active." It sits close to lapis lazuli and cobalt, a deep, saturated blue with real light in it.

The same announcement named four supporting Key Colours for spring and summer 2027, and they are worth writing down because they appear again and again in other forecasts:

**Energy Orange**, "a high-vibrancy hue"

**Pop Pink**, described as "joyful, uplifting and carefree"

**Meadowland Green**, "a nourishing mid-green"

**Clay**, "a pink-toned neutral with a warm, earthy quality"

Print studios have followed that lead closely. The Pattern Cloud's SS27 forecast lists its key colours as Cobalt Blue, Satsuma, Rose Blush, Meadow Green and Terracotta Pot, which is the same five-colour story under different names.

For pattern work, blue is the easiest of all colours to adopt, because blue florals, blue botanicals and blue-and-white prints already have a long history. A cyanotype or a blue-and-white botanical is not chasing the trend. It is sitting exactly where the trend landed.

The Paint Brands Went Green and Earthy Instead

Paint moves slower than fashion, and the 2027 announcements show it. Where WGSN went bright, the paint brands mostly went calm.

Sherwin-Williams chose Celery SW 6421, a colour its colour marketing manager Ashley Banbury calls "a soft, fresh yellow green with subtle warmth." She says it was picked because it reflects "wellness, balance and connection." Its supporting palette is more interesting than the headline shade: alongside Celery sit Georgian Bay, Potentially Purple, Kirsch Red and Plum Brown, which gives a green with a surprising amount of berry and plum around it.

Behr named Grounded, "an earthy olive green" that "moves effortlessly between olive and moss, anchored by subtle brown undertones." Behr describes its wider 2027 palette as "warm neutrals, earthy tones, muted pinks, clay hues, and airy blues."

And Graham & Brown chose Rose Earth, a dusty clay pink, saying the shade "reflects a growing desire to create homes that feel reassuring, expressive and deeply connected to the natural world."

Put those three next to WGSN's Clay and a clear pattern emerges. Green and pink clay are the two grounds of 2027. Olive, celery and moss carry the calm, pink earth carries the warmth, and blue is the accent that makes the whole palette feel current rather than safe.

Big Florals Are Back, and Bigger Than Before

The single clearest motif story for 2027 is scale.

The Pattern Cloud puts large-scale florals first in its womenswear directions, describing "ultra-zoomed, oversized blossoms" where bigger and more dramatic is better. After several years in which small ditsy prints and quiet neutrals dominated, the bloom that fills most of the tile has returned as the statement piece.

What makes 2027's big floral different from the maximalist florals of a few years ago is the treatment. The same forecast names a direction called Blurred and Soft Focus, built on "diffused edges, gentle gradients, and hazy transitions." Put that together with the oversized blossom and you get the defining floral of next year: very large, very painterly, and slightly out of focus, with brushwork and colour doing the work that crisp outlines used to do.

Scale is also the easiest trend to get wrong in a repeat. A bloom that looks dramatic on a swatch can turn into stripes of half-flowers once it tiles across a wall or a bolt of fabric. Craft Meets Technology: the Heimtextil Story

The most useful forecast for anyone working with digital pattern comes from the textile trade itself. Heimtextil's Trends 26/27, the direction set by the world's largest home textile fair, runs under the motto "Craft is a verb."

Its central figure is what it calls the techno-craftsman, a designer who treats digital tools "as an extension of his toolkit" rather than as competition. Several of its six directions follow from that:

**Visible co-work**, where "AI provides the designs, humans complete them."

**Sensing nature**, in which "digital tools take on the role of translators," turning sea surfaces into grids and lichen on rocks into decorative motifs.

**Crafted irregularity**, celebrating "knots, irregular dyeing, visible seams and asymmetrical finishes."

**A playful touch**, on the principle that "joy remains an essential part of design."

The colour story matches the paint brands at the start and WGSN at the end. Heimtextil moves from "sand, clay, soot, olive" towards "acidic green, digital lilac and bright screen blue."

For pattern buyers, this is the most freeing forecast of the year. It says openly that digitally made pattern is part of where textile design is going, and that what matters is the finishing, the curation and the eye behind it. Irregular texture, visible brushwork and natural structures are all described as strengths rather than flaws.

The Other Motifs to Watch

Beyond big florals, a handful of motif families run through almost every 2027 board.

**Paisley.** The Pattern Cloud says it "returns for SS27 with a contemporary twist," with "fresh colour palettes, fluid linework, and bold scale shifts." Paisley sits naturally beside block print, and the two work well together in one collection.

**Gingham and retro geometrics.** The same forecast calls gingham "a staple for SS27," with a picnic-party feel, and describes geometric prints taking "a nostalgic twist" through mid-century shapes and colours. These are the companion prints of 2027: the small check or the simple geo that sits next to a big floral in a collection.

**Botanical studies from nature.** Heimtextil's Sensing nature direction and the paint brands' greens both point to close studies of leaves, moss, lichen and pressed plants, with texture as the main event.

Building a 2027 Pattern Collection

Forecasts are only useful if they turn into choices. Here is how the 2027 picture translates into a working collection for a product range, a stationery line or a packaging system.

**Pick a ground from the paint forecasts.** Celery, olive, moss or clay pink as the base colour gives a range that feels calm and current at the same time. Cream and oat still work as the pale partner.

**Add one bright from WGSN.** Luminous Blue is the obvious choice, but Pop Pink or Energy Orange do the same job. Keep it to one, used as an accent, in the way that brown schemes this year used a single note of indigo or terracotta.

**Anchor the collection with one oversized floral.** This is the hero print, the one that carries the trend. Everything else in the collection supports it.

**Choose texture over flatness.** Every forecast this year rewards visible brushwork, soft edges and a slightly irregular surface. A painterly pattern will look more 2027 than a perfectly flat vector in the same colours.
